March 2011

A Note From Cheryl
We can’t believe it's already March! As the snow disappears and the world shows signs of spring, we have been keeping busy at Smiles Central. Our primary “Bag of Smiles” assembler is on vacation, and several of our leader volunteers have been doing a wonderful job filling in. Still, we are challenged to keep up as the orders pour in from various hospitals. Every day we seem to see a new bare spot on our craft shelf – yesterday it was pony beads, and today it is coloring books and crayons! Thank you to all of you who help fill our shelves with goodies! We couldn’t do this without you!

Our VERY BIG NEWS is the new video, Caitlin’s Smiles, Giving Children Hope, Laughs, and Smiles produced by FryFilms. This is a fantastic piece, a timeless video highlighting how we came to be, what our volunteers do and the children we serve.  Front and center – and most precious to me – is the segment about my daughter, Caitlin, featuring home video footage of her singing.

You can access the new video via our website or using the YouTube link on the left-hand side. Let us know what you think of the video – we’d love to hear from you!

Now is the time to register to participate with Caitlin’s Smiles in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community presented by Highmark Blue Shield on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at City Island in Harrisburg.

The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community is a fundraiser that benefits 38 local nonprofit health and human service agencies in Central Pennsylvania, including Caitlin’s Smiles. Highmark Blue Shield underwrites the cost of the walk so that 100 percent of the money raised by Caitlin's Smiles' supporters goes directly to support our mission.

Lisa Bleiweiss, last year’s walk leader, is back to coordinate another great walk! Tara Latsha will be assisting her. They’ve got some great raffle items donated for top walkers and teams! Consider forming a virtual walk team if you can’t make it to Harrisburg on May 14.

Register online to join the 5K or One-Mile Fun Walk, and then raise funds to support Caitlin’s Smiles!

For more information, contact Caitlin’s Smiles at or (717) 412-4759.  We also have pledge sheets and team captain sheets available.

Every year the Pennsylvania District Board chooses one organization or initiative that becomes the Youth Serving Youth (YSY) project for the year. The district board determines how Pennsylvania Key Clubs can support the organization or initiative through service and fundraising.  We were very fortunate to have been the Key Clubs YSY project for both the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 years.  At their annual Pennsylvania District Convention/Leadership Conference in Hershey this past weekend, we were presented with a check for $20,166 and many, many vanloads of craft supplies. The clubs donated 6,500 hours of service to us over the past school year. We’ve been honored to work with them! Next year, their YSY project is Ronald McDonald Charities, and we’re sure they’ll do a great job!

The Pennsylvania District Aktion Clubs, numbering over 600 member adults with disabilities, has adopted Caitlin's Smiles as their service partner. Several Aktion Clubs statewide are working on items for Caitlin's Smiles. They provide us with enthusiastic support because they are helping kids. The Aktion Club of Indiana is a huge supporter and continues to keep Indiana Regional Medical Center’s pediatric unit stocked with “Bags of Smiles.”
