A Note From Cheryl
May was quite an eventful month. Lots of great students were finishing senior projects, varsity athletes were completing community service hours, and clubs and Sunday Schools were wrapping up hours before summer vacations. Our tireless weekly volunteers were rather busy, too, as they dedicated themselves to putting smiles on the faces of children in hospitals.
 We completed our Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community, raising over $10,000, with 107 walkers in attendance despite the rainy weather forecast! We wrapped up our annual indoor yard sale along with our soup and sandwich sale to raise over $2,000. We donated leftover kitchen items to Keystone Family Services, puzzles and games to Bethesda Mission, blankets to a local animal rescue, small stuffed animals to several local nursing homes for bingo prizes and everything else to Goodwill. Thanks to all our hardworking volunteers who coordinated these events.
 In May, we were able to deliver 955 Bags of Smiles to hospitalized children. We also delivered 11,770 craft kits and 927 toys. Comcast Cares donations brought in nearly 500 assembled Bags of Smiles. Thanks to all of our wonderful supporters for helping us to meet the needs of children in the hospitals!

Caitlin's Smiles Art Auction
On October 1, 2011, Caitlin’s Smiles is having an art auction at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg Hershey in Camp Hill from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Featured will be artwork from local artists, artwork from children in hospitals, live music, appetizers and a cash bar.
We are looking for local artists who would like to donate art, which could include oil, acrylic, watercolor, sculpture, ceramic, jewelry, fiber, glass, photography and traditional prints. We are also looking for donations of art from children who have received our bags in the hospital. Please contact us for more information at caitlinssmiles@comcast.net.
Summer Volunteer Opportunities
We are looking for volunteers
to come during the weekdays to help pack hospital orders and get them
ready to ship out. Families are welcome to volunteer. Additionally,
help is needed to put away completed craft kits and get supplies ready
for incoming groups. A strong organizer would be wonderful.
Ronald
McDonald House in Hershey – Ongoing project to hold a crafting evening
once a week with the families. Our volunteers love it as much as the
families attending! The house has completed its expansion and is an
absolutely beautiful home-away-from-home. We are honored to be able to
get more involved with this effort. We are also providing the Ronald
McDonald House Family Waiting Room at Penn State Children’s Hospital
with Bags of Smiles for families of hospitalized children.
Youth Music and Arts Festival – July 9 at Calvary United Methodist Church in
Harrisburg, sponsored by PECAN, Inc (PA Education of Children in the
Arts Network). This event
will benefit Caitlin’s Smiles, Children’s Wheelchair Dance, and TASK
(Theatre Arts for Special Kids). We need volunteers to staff craft
tables.
12th Annual Fajita Fest 2011 – July 16 at the Polish Club, 3690 Needmore Rd., Dayton, OH. Proceeds benefit A Special Wish Foundation and Caitlin’s Smiles.
Knoebels Grove Fundraiser – August 13 at Elysburg. Picnic lunch served, silent auction and reduced ride tickets. More details to follow.

I wanted to thank everyone involved with your organization. I have a 3½ year old who is loving your projects. She looks forward to her chemo thanks to you. She enjoys necklace making the most. Thank you for putting a smile on her face and mine. Please pass my gratitude on to all of the volunteers.
